RESUMO

Injuries associated with the hamstring muscles in the running athlete are increasingly investigated due to the economic and functional consequences associated with them. Although hardly used in the treatment of sports injuries, medical ozone is effective and very well tolerated in the treatment of musculoskeletal pain, it was decided to add a series of medical ozone infiltrations to the treatment. The evolution of the case was recorded by medical thermography, in addition to measuring pain intensity (visual analog scale) and functional capacity (toe touch test). Pain intensity (visual analog scale) decreased from seven at baseline to two at the end of treatment (after two ozone infiltrations, one weekly). Mobility of the damaged area (toe touch test) improved from a distance of 8 cm at baseline to 0 cm at the end of treatment. Regarding medical thermography, after the first and second infiltration of ozone, the temperature rose to a significant increase in perfusion from baseline from 31.2 to 31.8 °C and from 31.2 to 32 °C, respectively. These results suggest the possible interest of medical ozone as an adjuvant treatment for the recovery of sports tendinopathies and encourage us to carry out further studies.

Diabetes Mellitus Type 2 presents with major serious complications such as chronic kidney failure, liver disease, diabetic neuropathy, cerebrovascular disease created by metabolic dysfunction that leads to a state of chronic inflammation in these patients. With the objective of evaluating the influence of rectal ozone therapy as complementary therapy in patients with Type 2 diabetes Mellitus. 38 patients suffering Diabetes Mellitus Type 2 were selected and randomly divided into two groups. The first group (Ozone) received conventional treatment plus rectal ozone therapy and the second (Conventional) only received conventional treatment. Blood glucose, glycosylated hemoglobin, LDL-cholesterol, VLDL-cholesterol and triglycerides were measured in blood, markers of liver and kidney damage and the DNA-4 scale of neuropathic pain were measured at the beginning and at end of treatments with rectal ozone therapy. The group of patients who received rectal ozone therapy plus conventional treatment showed a significant decrease in glycemic, glycated hemoglobin, VLDL-cholesterol, triglyceride, LDL-cholesterol values compared to the group with conventional treatment. It reflected significant improvement in the liver and kidney damage markers as well as the levels of the DNA.-4 pain scale, compared to the group that only received conventional treatment. The complementary application of rectal ozone therapy showed a protective effect on metabolic, liver and kidney function in patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, and also showed a certain analgesic character by reducing pain in said disease.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: IgA deficiency is a primary immunodeficiency predominantly due to an antibody defect, for which there is no replacement therapy. Treatment consists of prevention and treatment of infections and other associated conditions. Given the immunomodulatory and regulatory properties of the redox balance of ozone therapy in infectious and inflammatory conditions, evaluation of its effect on IgA deficiency is of interest. OBJECTIVE: Assess the benefits and possible adverse effects of ozone treatment in patients with IgA deficiency. METHODS: A monocentric randomized controlled phase 2 clinical trial (RPCEC 00000236) was carried out, after approval by the Institutional Ethics Committee of the Roberto Rodríguez Fernández Provincial General Teaching Hospital in Morón, Ciego de Ávila Province, Cuba. Included were 40 patients aged 5-50 years, distributed in 2 groups of 20, after agreeing to participate and signing informed consent. The experimental group received 2 cycles of ozone by rectal insufflation for 20 days (5 times a week for 4 weeks each cycle) with a 3-month interval between cycles, for a total of 40 doses, with age-adjusted dose ranges. The control group was treated with leukocyte transfer factor (Hebertrans), 1 U per m2 of body surface area subcutaneously, once weekly for 12 weeks. Frequency of appearance and severity of clinical symptoms and signs of associated diseases, serum immunoglobulin concentrations and balance of pro-oxidant and antioxidant biomarkers were recorded at treatment initiation and one month after treatment completion. Therapeutic response was defined as complete, partial, stable disease or progressive disease. Descriptive statistics and significance were calculated to compare groups and assess effect size. RESULTS: One month after treatment completion, 70% of patients in the experimental group experienced significant increases in IgG(p = 0.000) and IgM (p = 0.033). The experimental group also displayed decreased pro-oxidation biomarkers, glutathione modulation and increased antioxidant enzymes, with reduced oxidative stress; none of these occurred in the control group. Complete therapeutic response was achieved in 85% of patients in the experimental group and only 45% in the control group. Mild, transient adverse events were reported in both groups. CONCLUSIONS: Ozone therapy by rectal insufflation is a suitable therapeutic option for treating IgA deficiency because it produces antioxidant and immunomodulatory effects and is feasible, safe and minimally invasive. CONTRIBUTION OF THIS RESEARCH: This paper introduces in Cuba a new treatment a for IgA deficiency, with immunomodulatory and antioxidant effects offering substantial clinical benefits to patients with this immunodeficiency.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this study were to evaluate the effectiveness and tolerability of ozone therapy by rectal insufflation as add-on therapy in fibromyalgia management. DESIGN: Patients with fibromyalgia received 24 sessions of ozone therapy during a 12-week period. At each session, the administered dose of ozone was 8 mg (200 mL of gas, at a concentration of 40 µg/mL). Ozone sessions were given 5 days a week during the first 2 weeks, twice a week from weeks 3-6, and weekly from weeks 7-12. Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire (FIQ) was the main outcome measure, and was administered at baseline and at weeks 4, 8, and 12. Secondary outcome measures, administered at baseline and at endpoint, were the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, the Beck Depression Inventory, the State and Trait Anxiety Inventory, and the SF-12, the abbreviated form of the Short Form Health Survey. Emergent adverse reactions to treatment were recorded. RESULTS: FIQ total scores decreased significantly during the study period, with the decrease being observed in the first 4 weeks of the study. Significant improvement was also seen both in depression scores and in the Physical Summary Score of the SF-12. Transient meteorism after ozone therapy sessions was the most frequently reported side-effect. CONCLUSIONS: At the dose and number of sessions used in this study, ozone therapy by rectal insufflation seems to be beneficial for physical symptoms and depression of fibromyalgia.

INTRODUCTION/OBJECTIVES: Although inflammation in disc hernia (DH) has been recognized and it is a well-known process mediated by loss of the cellular redox balance, only a few studies about the impact of chronic oxidative stress on this neurological disorder have been made. Ozone therapy has been widely used with clinical efficacy in DH. This work aimed at characterizing the systemic redox status of patients with low back pain and neck pain as well as studying if ozone oxidative post-conditioning modified the pathological oxidative stress and protected against oxidative protein damage and if there is any relationship between oxidative changes and pain in both DH. METHODS: Redox status of 33 patients with diagnosis of DH by computerized axial tomography, nuclear magnetic resonance, and clinical evaluations was studied. Ozone was administered by paravertebral way. After ozone treatment, plasmatic levels of antioxidant/pro-oxidant markers, pain, and life quality disability parameters were evaluated. RESULTS: One hundred percent of patients showed a severe oxidative stress. Major changes in superoxide dismutase activity, total hydroperoxides, advanced oxidation protein products, fructolysine content, and malondialdehyde were observed. After ozone oxidative post-conditioning, there was a re-establishment of patients' cellular redox balance as well as a decrease in pain in both DH. A relationship between indicators of oxidative protein damage and pain was demonstrated. CONCLUSIONS: Ozone therapy protected against oxidation of proteins and reduced the pain. Relationship between markers of oxidative protein damage, disability parameters, and pain suggests the role of oxidative stress in the pathological processes involved in DH.

RESUMO

This research was performed in order to determine the potential protective effects of ozonized sunflower oil (OSO) in the injury of rat gastric mucosa induced by absolute ethanol and as well as to elucidate the role of reactive oxygen species (ROS), lipid peroxidation, and some important constituents of antioxidant defense such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), and catalase (CAT) in these effects. OSO was administered to rats intragastrically by a cannula and it was applied during four days to animals. The doses of OSO administered daily to each group of rats were 4, 12, and 24 mg/kg, respectively, and one hour after the last treatment, absolute ethanol (1 mL/200 mg body weight) was administered. Our results showed that gastric ulcer index was significantly reduced in rats pretreated with OSO as compared with ethanol-treated controls. However, in rats pretreated with OSO, no significant reduction of TBARS content in gastric mucosa was found as compared to those rats treated with ethanol alone. In contrast, SOD and GSH-Px activities were significantly increased in gastric mucosa of OSO-pretreated rats with respect to those treated with ethanol alone. In summary, our results demonstrate that OSO pretreatment exerts protective effects in ethanol-induced gastric ulcers in rats. Furthermore, these results provide evidence that these protective effects of OSO are mediated at least partially by stimulation of some important antioxidant enzymes such as SOD and GSH-Px, which are scavengers of ROS and therefore prevent gastric injury induced by them.

BACKGROUND: The relationship and behavior of serum immunoglobulin E (IgE) level, peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) human leukocyte antigen DR (HLA-DR) expression and erythrocyte glutathione antioxidant pathway in asthma patients treated with systemic ozone therapy have not been studied before. METHODS: Asthma patients were treated about 1 year with three cycles (5 or 6 months each) with three different ozone therapy protocols. Ozone major autohemotherapy (MAHT) was applied at doses of 4 and 8 mg, 15 sessions each cycle; and ozone rectal insufflations (RI) at a dose of 10 mg, 20 sessions each cycle. Serum IgE, HLA-DR expression in PBMC and biomarkers for antioxidant pathway were measured before and at the end of each cycle. Lung function and symptoms test were recorded at the beginning and after the third cycle. RESULTS: IgE and HLA-DR decreased with the three types of treatments, while increments in reduced glutathione, glutathione peroxidase, glutation reductase and glutathione S-transferase were achieved with all treatments. Lung function and symptoms test were markedly improved. However, in all parameters the best response was obtained in the order: MAHT at 8 mg better than MAHT at 4 mg better than RI at 10 mg. Before ozone treatment, glutathione antioxidant parameters were under the normal reference values, suggesting the occurrence of oxidative stress associated with atopic asthma. CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrates the effectiveness of ozone therapy in reducing IgE and inflammatory mediators along with the induction of antioxidant elements. The study raises the role of systemic ozone therapy in atopic asthma by means of its immunomodulatory and oxidative stress regulation properties.

One of the most impressive installation clinical pictures that obliges the Otorhinolaryngology specialist to act under the criteria of clinical protocol and treatment is the appearance of a rapidly progressive installation neurosensorial hypoacusia. Vascular, viral and immunological causes by themselves, or in an interactive manner, have been considered responsible for the disorders that are originated and that lead to a clinical picture of auditive loss. For all these reasons, we decided to evaluate the results obtained after applying the combination of two treatment methods, which, according to the available information, may be effective in the attention of this pathology. A significant result of the treatment protocol was the recovery rate of 88 percent of the treated patients(AU)
